Lecture by Olivier Zeller entitled XVIIIth Century Announcement Papers as a source for social history. The example of Lyon.
The aim of this talk is to examine a rich historical source from the second half of the 18th century: newspaper advertisements. After a brief historical overview of this type of publication in France and Europe, three different themes that emerge from the advertisements will be discussed: the domestic labor market, early forms of carpooling, and ways of determining the value of houses and apartments. In conclusion, the variety of research perspectives opened up by this type of source will be highlighted.
The talk will be in English.
